Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of books do you have?
As the bookselling arm of Deep Vellum Publishing, we have plenty of our own books (a whole wall, in fact), but also lots of others!
What we might have more of than you’d think: work in translation, books from small presses, books that bend genre, zines, poetry.
What we might have less of than you’d think: self-help, business, textbooks, reference, notebooks.
We have a curated selection of titles for all ages and tons of institutional knowledge; our small space may not hold the title you come looking for, but we pride ourselves on you leaving with the book you need. And you can always order something specific from us through Bookshop!
How long have you been in business?
Deep Vellum began publishing books with Texas: The Great Theft in 2013 and we opened our bookstore to the public in March 2016.
Can I pet the dog?
Yes, he’s a very sweet old man. He may sniff you or he may just keep napping, but unless you have food he can beg for, he’ll probably just chill. His name is Jasper.
If you’re a publisher, will you publish my book?
That’s a question for the office people. You can check out the Deep Vellum submission page HERE—we wish you the best of luck!
I’ve already got a book out, will you stock it at the store?
Maybe! You can email info about your book to admin@deepvellum.org and our buyer will be in touch if we’re interested in carrying it.
We also aren’t opposed to authors dropping off sample copies at the store, but we aren’t able to return such copies regardless of whether we decide to carry them, so email is your lowest-cost bet.
Can I buy a gift card?
Yes! Gift cards are available to purchase online through Deep Vellum and can be used to pay for books online or in-store.
Got any cool facts about the area?
Deep Vellum Books is located in the heart of Deep Ellum, a historic (and occasionally mythologized) neighborhood in Downtown Dallas. Our store is the site of a Texas Historic Site plaque dedicated to Huddie William Ledbetter, aka Lead Belly, a legendary folk & blues musician whose work has been covered by the likes of Bob Dylan, Brian Wilson, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Frank Sinatra, Johnny Cash, and many others, and is known as a deep influence on the works of Kurt Cobain and Nirvana. Our store also hosts the original Club Clearview sign, along with other symbols of the history of the region.
[Something else]?
We're always happy to answer additional questions. You can email us at admin@deepvellum.org or call us at 469-781-4881 and we'll get back to you as quickly as possible—but please remember that we’re a small business and only human (except for Jasper).
