Book Subscription FAQs

HOW DO SUBSCRIPTIONS WORK?

Deep Vellum book subscriptions are monthly surprises in your mailbox, full of great literature (and the occasional small token of our appreciation). We curate books to send to our subscribers each month based on the subscription type a subscriber chooses to receive. There's no expiration date on your subscription, so no need to worry about your subscription running out or forgetting to renew. Each subscription features free shipping (!) and a selection of books geared toward the topic or genre of the subscription. Books are sent via USPS media mail from Dallas by the 5th of each month and usually arrives within 7-10 days. Most importantly, you're supporting an independent bookstore AND independent publishers who are committed to great books, great literature, and great community.

THIS IS AWESOME! CAN I GIVE A SUBSCRIPTION AS A GIFT?

Absolutely! There's no better When you sign up for the subscription, please let us know that it's a gift and include the recipient's name and address in the Ship To fields. Please use YOUR email and billing address with payment. We do like to mail things to everyone, not just our subscribers but to people like you who share the love of books with others.

HOW DO YOU CHOOSE OR CURATE YOUR BOOKS?

Depends on the subscription - for publisher-oriented subscribers, the curation is handled by the publisher, especially for new releases. For genres, topics, and other types of subscriptions, we curate the books the same way we curate the books on our shelves: a small bookish committee compiles a long list of must-have works, then we winnow the selection to precisely the books we believe are critical for our readers at that point in time. (There are often passionate defenses, arguing, and various forms of the seven stages of grief each month - and every month, we start the process anew.)  Once the monthly store curation is complete, THEN we curate the titles that will go to subscribers. We rotate the subscriber curation among the members of the selection committee, so you'll receive a diverse selection of books within your subscription and not just one person's opinion. We also guarantee each book we send - if it's not what you expect, you've already read it, or it's something you outright don't like for any reason, we'll make it right.

WHEN SHOULD I EXPECT MY SUBSCRIPTION TO START?

We pull our current subscriber lists on the first of each month, so no matter when you sign up for your subscription, your first shipment will be at the beginning of the month. If you've just signed up, but missed the deadline, you may be able to sneak into the month's shipments - just email us at subscriptions [at] deepvellum.com and let us know, especially if it's a gift subscription. (We know a thing or two about last-minute gifts!)

WHEN SHOULD I EXPECT MY BOOKS TO ARRIVE IN MY MAILBOX?

If you're in the continental US, shipments usually arrive 7-10 days after they're shipped. We try to get everything out by no later than the 5th of the month, so if you haven't received your book by the 15th, let us know.

If you're outside the continental US, shipments can take two to three weeks to arrive, depending on where it's going. If you haven't received your shipment by the 25th, let us know.

I'M NOT PICKY, BUT WHAT IF I DON'T LIKE A BOOK?

We understand. Email us at subscriptions [at] deepvellum.com and let us know that the book isn't what you're expecting and what you don't like (detail is good as we don't want to make the same error twice), and we'll expedite a different selection to you. We recognize that tastes vary among readers, and while we do our best to hit home runs each month with our subscribers, we're committed to your reading enjoyment.

DO YOU INCLUDE TRIGGER WARNINGS WITH YOUR SELECTIONS?

We don't include specific trigger warnings with our subscriptions, BUT: if you (or your recipient) have a known trigger, PLEASE let us know. We'll keep note of it (and it will remain completely confidential) and we'll do our best to avoid sending books that may act as a trigger for you (or your recipient).

YOU SENT A GREAT BOOK, BUT I'VE ALREADY READ IT. AM I OUT OF LUCK?

Are you on our selection committee? It's fantastic that you found this one without our help. Email us at subscriptions [at] deepvellum.com and let us know that you've already read the book, and we'll expedite a different selection to you.

HEY! MY NEIGHBOR/SISTER/MOTHER/CO-WORKER IS ALSO A SUBSCRIBER, BUT SHE RECEIVED A DIFFERENT BOOK. WHY?

We're not a faceless, soul-crushing corporation mindlessly shipping books, that's why. As we get to know you - and receive feedback from you - a living, breathing, book-loving, coffee-drinking Deep Vellum human personalizes your subscription (within the bounds of the subscription type) each month. This means that you may receive the same book as your neighbor/sister/mother/co-worker one month and receive a different book another month. And by the way, thanks for supporting independent bookstores & publishers!

I WANT A SUBSCRIPTION FOR FIRST-EDITION RENAISSANCE WORKS WRITTEN BY TRAPPIST MONKS THAT COMES WITH BEER PAIRINGS. CAN YOU DO THAT?

We like the way you think. Email us at subscriptions [at] deepvellum.com and tell us what kind of book subscription (and pairings) you want each month. More than likely, we can make your dreams come true.

MY MOTHER-IN-LAW GAVE ME THIS FOR CHRISTMAS AND I'D PREFER ONE OF HER TERRIBLE SWEATERS. CAN I GET A REFUND?

Really? We've seen those sweaters - and that's what you'd prefer to a book subscription that supports writers, authors, translators, publishers, and an independent bookstore? (Sigh.) Yes. If you're not the type who reads or who doesn't care about any of the aforementioned stakeholders, we're sorry. Email us at subscriptions [at] deepvellum.com and we'll process a refund for you.

I'VE GOT MORE QUESTIONS THAN A TWO YEAR OLD WITH A HANDFUL OF COTTON CANDY. CAN YOU HELP?

You bet! Email us at subscriptions [at] deepvellum.com and we'll get everything answered for you, including why the sky is blue and why independent bookstores are the greatest asset to urban development money can buy.
